Stone-Coated Steel

Stone-coated steel is pressed steel with an acrylic-bonded granule surface, formed into tile, shake or shingle profiles. It gives a home the look of a heavy roof without the structural consequences of one.

Why it suits Sacramento housing stock

A great many homes here were built for concrete tile, and a great many more were built for composition and cannot carry tile at all. Stone-coated steel weighs a fraction of concrete tile, so it can go on houses whose framing would never take the real thing.

It also reads as tile or shake from the street, which matters in neighbourhoods and in communities with architectural guidelines.

How it differs from standing seam

  • Appearance — it imitates traditional roofing rather than announcing itself as metal
  • Installed in panels with a batten or direct-to-deck system depending on the product
  • The granule surface dulls the sound of rain that people associate with metal
  • Typically less costly than standing seam, more than composition
  • Many products carry Class 4 impact ratings and strong wind ratings

What to check before specifying it

  • Whether your HOA's architectural guidelines permit it — show them a physical sample, not a brochure
  • The finish and granule warranty, separately from the steel substrate warranty
  • Installation method, since batten systems and direct-to-deck systems behave differently
  • Whether the installer has actually done this product before — these are not shingles

Common questions

Does stone-coated steel look like real tile?

From the street, closely. Up close the profile repeats more regularly than clay or concrete and the edges are thinner. Look at an installed roof rather than a sample board before deciding.

Can stone-coated steel go over my existing roof?

Some systems are designed for recover over one layer of composition with a batten arrangement, which saves tear-off cost. Whether it is appropriate depends on the deck condition and the code limit on layers — it is a decision to make after the deck is assessed, not before.
