Colours & Finish Systems
Two metal roofs in the same colour can look very different after ten Sacramento summers. The difference is the finish system, and it is the specification line most buyers never ask about.
PVDF versus SMP
- PVDF — sold as Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000. The premium architectural coating, with the best colour and gloss retention under UV
- SMP — silicone-modified polyester. Costs less, performs acceptably, and chalks and fades noticeably sooner in high-UV climates
- Sacramento is a high-UV climate. On a roof you intend to keep for decades, PVDF is the specification that justifies itself
Read the finish warranty separately
A metal roof carries more than one warranty. The substrate warranty covers the steel or aluminium against perforation. The finish warranty is a separate document covering chalk, fade and film integrity, usually with numerical limits and a term of its own.
Ask for the finish warranty specifically. It is the one that governs what your roof looks like in year fifteen.
Colour, reflectance and heat
Lighter colours with high solar reflectance reduce heat gain, and many metal finishes are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council so the values can be compared rather than guessed at. Dark colours in full Central Valley sun run considerably hotter.
California's energy code sets cool-roof requirements that vary by climate zone, building type and scope of work. Sacramento is Climate Zone 12; we confirm the applicable requirement against the permit for your address rather than assuming it.
Practical colour advice
- Look at a full installed roof in daylight, not a 3-inch sample chip
- Matte and low-gloss finishes hide minor oil-canning on flat panels far better than gloss
- Dark panels show dust and pollen, and Sacramento has plenty of both in summer
- Check HOA architectural guidelines before you fall in love with a colour

Does a light metal roof lower cooling costs?
